Bridges

Missing teeth are a source of embarrassment for many people. If you have gaps in your smile, chewing may be difficult, and you may find it a challenge to speak clearly. Dental bridges are time-tested and restore function and comfort, stabilize surrounding teeth, and improve your oral health.

The Importance of Replacing Missing Teeth

Losing a tooth can certainly affect your appearance, but that’s not the only problem. Each of your teeth performs an important job and is designed to work with other teeth to allow you to speak and chew properly. When a tooth is lost, adjacent teeth are subject to additional stress, making these simple actions uncomfortable and difficult.

A missing tooth also creates other problems that impact your oral health. The space left by a missing tooth allows neighboring teeth to gradually shift out of their proper position, drifting into the empty space. This can create a cascade of unwanted effects:

  • Severely misaligned dental bite
  • Premature wearing of teeth
  • Fracture and chipping of teeth
  • Teeth grinding
  • TMJ disorder
  • Bone loss and gum disease

Fixed Dental Bridges

Dental bridges effectively restore function and appearance by filling the empty space left by a missing tooth. A bridge can be made using gold, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or ceramic. The material we choose depends on your needs and requirements for strength, wear, and esthetics.

A fixed bridge is made up of three or more pieces – two dental crowns secured to neighboring teeth and a replacement tooth that fills the empty space. It is also referred to as a “fixed bridge” when it is cemented in place.

Placing Dental Bridges

Placing a fixed bridge usually requires just two appointments. First, we prepare neighboring teeth to make sure that the supporting crowns fit perfectly. We then take impressions of your teeth, which are used to create your fixed bridge. You will leave our office with a temporary bridge to wear while your new bridge is custom-crafted to your exact specifications.

When you return to our Eynon dental office for your second visit, we will adjust the bridge to ensure proper fit and to create a perfect bite. Before you leave, we will provide instructions for caring for your new bridge. Proper oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings will help keep your bridge in excellent condition for many years.
